Here is what we have learned:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Actual use of BIM for 3D collision detection has not changed in 9 years.<\/li>\n<li>People continue to anticipate using BIM for 3D collision detection more in the future . . .<\/li>\n<li>. . . Each year, we ask what percentage of projects use BIM for 3D collision detection.<\/p>\n<p>This first graph compares the actual use of 3D collision detection in 2018 with what was anticipated three years ago in 2015. The actual use is lower than what was anticipated. This result is the same as what we have seen\u00a0over the last five years.<\/p>\n<p>(For these graphs, t<span style=\"color: #000000;\">he x-axis is the answer the survey respondent gave to the question. The y-axis is the\u00a0percentage of respondents who gave that answer. For example, at the far left of the graph, 25% of respondents used 3D collision detection on none of their projects in 2018. The graph is a little messy, but it is largely unchanged from year to year. Again, the graph is a little messy\u00a0but is largely unchanged from year to year. This result has not changed since we first reported it in 2013. We expect the actual use of BIM for 3D collision detection to continue to remain the same in the future.<\/div>\n<div class=\"w3-half w3-theme-3 w3-padding\">&#8220;We do not work on many projects where 3D collision detection is required. We use it more as an internal QC tool on larger projects.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Different Ways BIM is Used<\/h2>\n<p>We have been tracking four uses of BIM since the start of our survey: 3D collision detection, automated design, material takeoffs, and green design. We also have been tracking companies that do not use BIM at all.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to 2015, we asked, &#8220;Select all the ways your company uses BIM on projects.&#8221; Starting in 2015, we asked, &#8220;Select the\u00a0percentage of your projects that you use BIM for this specific purpose&#8221;. The graph below treats responses of 0% as &#8220;no&#8221; and anything else as &#8220;yes&#8221;, allowing us to compare all the years.<\/p>\n<div class=\"w3-row\">\n<div class=\"w3-half w3-padding-right\">The change in wording caused a significant jump in the use of BIM for material takeoffs and green building design. Otherwise, the use of BIM for each purpose has been fairly stable over the past nine years.<\/div>\n<div class=\"w3-half w3-theme-3 w3-padding\">&#8220;We have not had any projects or bid requests that required BIM by the architects or contractors. Like 3D collision detection, we ask about\u00a0usage during the year of the survey and ask for a prediction for three years in the future. This year we are able to compare the initial predictions\u00a0for use in 2018 with the actual use in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>There are three graphs for each use of BIM:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first compares the prediction for use in 2018 with the actual use in 2018. It shows how correct the predictions from three years ago were.<\/li>\n<li>The second shows the actual use for the four years that we have data. It\u00a0shows whether usage has changed in that time.<\/li>\n<li>The third compares the actual use in 2018 with the predicted use in 2021. It shows the expectation for increased use in the future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Any BIM On a Project:\u00a0<\/strong>We intentionally did not define BIM for this question. It was left up to the respondent to decide what &#8220;BIM&#8221; meant and whether it applied to their projects.<\/p>\n<p>The actual use of any BIM on a project in 2018 fell short of the prediction from 2015.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1297 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-any-2018.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-any-2018.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-any-2018-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The actual use of any BIM on a project over the last four years has not significantly changed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1328\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-any-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-any-1.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-any-1-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is predicted that the use of any BIM\u00a0on any project will increase in the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1298 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-any-2021.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-any-2021.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-any-2021-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Automated Design and Calculations:\u00a0<\/strong>This use of BIM should not depend upon anyone else on the project using BIM. You can size a duct, a feeder conductor, or a pipe whether or not the architect or structural engineer provides you with their model.\u00a0This use is one where every project could benefit from BIM.<\/p>\n<p>The prediction from 2015 is the most accurate of all the predictions.\u00a0The actual use of BIM for automated design and calculations is reasonably close, though a little lower than predicted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1306 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-calcs-2018-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-calcs-2018-1.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-calcs-2018-1-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The actual use of BIM for automated design and calculations has increased\u00a0slightly over the last four years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-calcs-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-calcs-1.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-calcs-1-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is predicted that the use of BIM for automated design and calculations will increase in the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1307 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-calcs-2021-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-calcs-2021-1.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-calcs-2021-1-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Between the obvious benefits of using BIM for this purpose and the accuracy of the previous prediction, we expect this use to increase in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Construction Documents:<\/strong>\u00a0This use of BIM also should not depend upon anyone else on the project using BIM. Having a model from the architect should help, but it is not necessary. This use is also one where every project could benefit from BIM.<\/p>\n<p>The actual use of BIM for creating construction documents in 2018 fell short of the prediction from 2015.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1303 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-construction-docs-2018-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-construction-docs-2018-1.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-construction-docs-2018-1-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The actual use of BIM for creating construction document appears to have fallen over the last four years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1330\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-construction-documents-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-construction-documents-1.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-construction-documents-1-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The predicted use in the future is not far from the current use. The prediction this year is lower than the prediction from three years ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1304 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-construction-docs-2021-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-construction-docs-2021-1.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-construction-docs-2021-1-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"w3-row\">\n<div class=\"w3-half w3-padding-right\">This result is surprising to us. We thought the prediction for 2015 was reasonable, but the actual use this year of BIM for construction documents is much lower. We also find it\u00a0interesting that our respondents are not anticipating much increase in the use of BIM for construction documents.\u00a0We thought this use was one that should be easy to take advantage of, but we appear to be wrong in our prediction.<\/div>\n<div class=\"w3-half w3-theme-3 w3-padding\">&#8220;We are finding that the majority of architects want a Revit model from us so that they do not have to draw the RCP. They are not generally concerned with an accurate model; only that the light fixtures show up. .&nbsp;.&nbsp;. We have been doing 100% of our design in CAD and then having a draftsman use the CAD file as a red-line to insert Revit light fixtures in a model to be sent to the client.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Green Building Design:\u00a0<\/strong>Green building design\u00a0is a hot topic, but not a very common use for BIM. Most green design is about design choices (daylighting of rooms or choice of mechanical equipment) that BIM cannot help the engineer with. Once the choice is made, BIM can be used to model it, but there is no magic &#8220;make my building green&#8221; button.<\/p>\n<p>The actual of use for BIM for green building design is less than was predicted in 2015.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1308 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-green-2018.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-green-2018.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-green-2018-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The actual use for BIM for green building design\u00a0has not changed over the last four years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-green-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"698\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-green-1.png 698w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-green-1-300x146.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The prediction for the future closely matches the actual use of BIM for green building design this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1309 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-green-2021.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-green-2021.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-green-2021-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We appear to be correct that using BIM for green building design is not a common use and will stay that way. Green building design is important, but it does not appear to be related to BIM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Revit Model:<\/strong>\u00a0Revit is a specific implementation of BIM. It is often requested by specific companies and government agencies as a final deliverable for a project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The actual use of Revit in 2018 is less than the predicted use in 2015.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1310 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-revit-2018.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-revit-2018.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-revit-2018-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"w3-row\">\n<div class=\"w3-half w3-padding-right\">The actual of use\u00a0Revit has not changed over the last four years.<\/div>\n<div class=\"w3-half w3-theme-3 w3-padding\">&#8220;We are trying to get into the Revit world but no projects have required it in the past year.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1332\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-revit-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"698\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-revit-1.png 698w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/actual-revit-1-300x146.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"w3-row\">\n<div class=\"w3-half w3-padding-right\">There is some anticipation of using Revit more in the future. Most notable is the expectation of no use of Revit changing from over 35% to 15%.<\/div>\n<div class=\"w3-half w3-theme-3 w3-padding\">&#8220;Several architects that we work with are doing their designs in Revit and exporting to AutoCAD for us. To date, they have not required us to provide BIM models back to them.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1311 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-revit-2021.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-revit-2021.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designmaster.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/prediction-revit-2021-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"w3-row\">\n<div class=\"w3-half w3-padding-right\">Revit makes sense for some, but not all, projects. Based upon other conversations we have with customers, we agree that the number of companies that do not use Revit on any project will decrease. However, we expect that most companies will continue to use Revit on only a portion of their projects. Companies that use Revit on all their projects will continue to be the minority.<\/div>\n<div class=\"w3-half w3-theme-3 w3-padding\">&#8220;We are mostly using Design Master to export 3D models to Revit. Our clients don&#8217;t love this, but so far they are okay with it. We get comments on when are we going full Revit all the time, but when we press the issue they relent and still allow DM.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Other Uses: <\/strong>In the past, we have\u00a0asked about the use of BIM for material takeoffs, simulation and animation, and prefabrication.\u00a0None of these uses appears to be very popular. Most respondents do not use BIM for any of them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fees:\u00a0<\/strong>Finally, we asked whether respondents charged more when asked to use BIM for these various purposes.\u00a0For most uses, most people do not increase their fee.<\/p>\n<p>The two exceptions have been using BIM for 3D collision detection and using BIM to deliver a Revit model. Both of these uses of BIM require additional work from the MEP engineer or designer\u00a0that does not directly benefit them.<\/p>\n<p>This graph tracks the number of respondents that do increase their fee for 3D modeling for collision detection and for providing a Revit deliverable. The handful of respondents from other locations\u00a0were filtered out of the results.<\/p>\n<p>The following graphs show the size and types of companies where respondents work. Most of the respondents work at large companies. Our conclusion is the same one we&#8217;ve stated for the last few years: The use of 3D collision detection in the MEP industry is stable and is unlikely to change in the future; projects that benefit from 3D collision detection are already using it, and projects that do not currently benefit from 3D collision detection are unlikely to start benefiting from it in the future.<\/div>\n<div class=\"w3-half w3-theme-3 w3-padding\">&#8220;I do work with mechanical and plumbing designers from time to time, but the projects that I typically do are small retail projects, such as coffee shops or wireless provider storefronts. Collision avoidance on these types of projects is primarily handled in the field. When I worked for a much larger national AE firm, working on large medical projects, BIM was used a lot for 3D collision detection.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The actual use of BIM for other purposes also appears to be fairly stable. There does not appear to be a trend to increase the use of BIM for other purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Our prediction for the future is that the use of BIM for automated design and calculations, construction documents, and providing a Revit deliverable will increase.
