Where Revit Plumbing Stops, AquaBIM Begins

Of all the MEP disciplines, plumbing actually gets a fairly good deal in Revit. Unlike some systems that barely exist in the model, plumbing has real native tools behind it. So when we started thinking about a plumbing add-in, the question was not “how do we build this from nothing.” It was “where does Revit leave off, and how do we pick up from there.” That is what AquaBIM is built to do.

What Revit Already Does Well

Give Revit credit. It can automatically size domestic water piping using friction and velocity methods. It converts fixture units to flow straight from the plumbing code tables. It calculates pressure drop based on your actual pipe geometry and the fluid running through it. If you design domestic water systems, you already have a real head start inside the model, and that is more than most disciplines can say.

Where It Leaves You Hanging

The trouble is that plumbing does not stop at domestic water. Revit does not automatically size sanitary waste or vent systems at all, which is a large share of the work on most projects. It has no hot water circulation system to speak of. And it quietly struggles at the edges, mis-sizing low fixture unit fixtures because the curves it leans on were never defined for them. So you end up back in the familiar routine: the water side lives in the model, and the rest lives in a spreadsheet, a hand calculation, and a set of drawings you keep nudging back into agreement every time something moves.

What AquaBIM Adds

AquaBIM is a plumbing design add-in built specifically for Revit, and its job is to close those gaps so the whole system lives in one coordinated model. It sizes domestic water, sanitary, and vent piping directly in your Revit project, driven by your model geometry rather than a separate spreadsheet. It performs fixture-unit, demand, and flow calculations automatically, and keeps them in sync with the fixtures and connections already in your model. And it stores your plumbing data, flow rates, connections, and system assignments, on the fixtures themselves, so your documentation and your design are the same thing instead of two records you have to reconcile.
