How Design Master Sets Layers

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

The layers of devices inserted using Design Master are controlled by the project settings. The current AutoCAD layers settings are ignored.

The command to set the layers depends upon which program you are using:

  • HVAC: “DM HVAC->Customization->Layers->Edit Project List”
  • Electrical: “DM Electrical->Customization->Layers->Edit Project List”
  • Plumbing: “DM Plumbing->Customization->Layers->Edit Project List”

All of the layer dialog boxes have the same layout. The difference is in the layer keys that are available.

The top-left grid sets which layer system you are working in. The “General” system is for items that do not have a layer system associated with them. This includes alignment points, room outlines, schedules, and similar items.

The default customization includes two systems, “New” and “Existing”. You can add as many more systems as you need. One system that is commonly added is “Demo.”

The top-right grid is a mapping between what we call “Layer Keys” and AutoCAD layers. There is a layer key for each item in Design Master. It is possible to have multiple layer keys use the same layer.

The bottom grid is the list of layers that are available to be used when assigning layer keys. The settings in this grid match the settings available in the AutoCAD LAYER command.

To quickly make changes to large numbers of layers, use the “Export Layer System” and “Import Layer System” buttons.

After you make changes to the layers, you might need to update the drawings in your project that have Design Master items already inserted on them.

To update the layer definitions, use the “Update Layers” command:

  • HVAC: “DM Electrical->Customization->Layers->Update Drawing Layers to Match Project List”
  • Electrical: “DM Electrical->Customization->Layers->Update Drawing Layers to Match Project List”
  • Plumbing: “DM Electrical->Customization->Layers->Update Drawing Layers to Match Project List”

To update the layers that items are inserted on, use the “Coordinate Drawings and Database” command.
